Fort Washington and Fort Sullivan

During the American Revolution, two important forts were built on and near Peirce Island in 1775. These were Fort Washington and Fort Sullivan. Fort Washington was located right on Peirce Island. It was built in a star shape using earthworks, which are walls made of earth.

These forts were named after important figures:

Both forts were led by Captain Titus Salter during the American Revolution. They helped protect the area. The forts were used again during the War of 1812 but were no longer needed after that war ended.
