Pelican Island is an island located in Galveston County, Texas. It is part of the city of Galveston. The island is connected to Galveston Island by a special bridge called a causeway.
Pelican Island is home to Texas A&M University at Galveston. It also has two cool museum ships. These are the USS Stewart (DE-238), which is a destroyer escort, and the USS Cavalla (SS-244), which is a submarine. You can visit these ships at Seawolf Park.
Seawolf Parkway is the only main road that goes across the island.
History of Pelican Island
In 1965, a businessman named George Mitchell bought a lot of land on Pelican Island. He later gave some of this land away. This donated land became the permanent home for Texas A&M University at Galveston.
The Intracoastal Waterway runs along the north side of Pelican Island. This waterway is like a special canal system. It helps separate Pelican Island from another nearby island.
