History of Pellejas
How Puerto Rico Became a U.S. Territory
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States government took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This was called a census. The census found that 1,521 people lived in the Pellejas barrio at that time.
