Pelt (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈpɛlt]) is a new and exciting municipality located in the Belgian province of Limburg. Discovering Pelt: A New Belgian Town
Pelt is a modern municipality with a rich history. It was formed to bring together the strengths of its two parent towns, Neerpelt and Overpelt. This merger helps them work better together and offer more to their citizens.
How Pelt Was Formed
The idea to merge Neerpelt and Overpelt had been discussed for some time. Both towns agreed that joining forces would be a good idea. They wanted to create a larger, more efficient municipality.
Choosing the Name 'Pelt'
Once the merger was agreed upon, the people needed to choose a new name for their combined town. On November 4, 2017, a special vote, called a referendum, was held. Citizens could choose from three names: Dommelpelt, Pelt, or Pelten.
More than 74 percent of the voters chose "Pelt." This name has a long history. It comes from the Romans, who used to call this sandy area Palethe. This old Roman word meant "boggy land," describing the wet, marshy areas that were once common here.
The Official Start of Pelt
After the name was chosen, the local governments, known as municipal councils, gave their final approval for the merger. This happened on December 18, 2017. Neerpelt and Overpelt officially stopped being separate municipalities on December 31, 2018. The very next day, on January 1, 2019, Pelt officially began its life as a brand new municipality in Limburg.
