Penance (which means Aithrí in Irish) is an Irish film from 2018. It is a historical drama, meaning it tells a story set in the past. The movie was directed by Tom Collins. It takes place in Ulster, a part of Ireland, during two different years: 1916 and 1969.

The film stars Peter Coonan as a Catholic priest named Father Eoin McDonnell. This priest is an Irish nationalist, meaning he supports Ireland becoming an independent country. He encourages a young boy to join the independence movement. Later, many years pass, and the priest regrets his choices.

Making the Film Penance

Penance was filmed in a few different places in Ireland. The main locations were Ramelton in County Donegal and Derry in Northern Ireland. Most of the movie is spoken in the Irish language.

When they filmed in Derry, they used places like St Columba's Church, Long Tower, Bishop Street, and Society Street. These areas still looked much like they did in the 1960s, which was perfect for the film.

The story for Penance was inspired by an older story. It came from a work by Pádraic Ó Conaire called "Seacht mBua an Éirí Amach." This means "Seven Virtues of the [Easter] Rising."

Many groups helped pay for the film. These included TG4 (an Irish TV channel), the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, and the Irish Film Board. Other supporters were the Irish Language Broadcast Fund and Northern Ireland Screen.

What is the Story About?

The film's story begins in Derry in 1969. We see a Catholic priest, Father Eoin McDonnell. He helps a senior leader of the Irish Republican Army avoid arrest. This leader's name is Antaine.

Father Eoin then remembers his past, going back to 1916. In rural County Donegal, he met a teenage Antaine. At that time, Father Eoin convinced the young Antaine to join the movement for Irish independence. The film shows how these past actions affect the characters many years later.
