Pendle Water is a small river in Lancashire, England. It starts high up on Pendle Hill. The river then flows through a deep valley between Barley Moor and Spence Hill. Here, it fills two large lakes called the Upper and Lower Ogden Reservoirs.
After leaving the lower reservoir, Pendle Water flows east. It passes through the villages of Barley and Roughlee. Then, it meets Blacko Water near a place called Water Meetings. Blacko Water brings water from the Admergill valley. The river then turns south. It flows through Higherford and Barrowford. In Barrowford, another river, Colne Water, joins it. As it goes past Nelson and Colne College, Walverden Water also flows into Pendle Water.
From this point, the river flows west. It passes the Lomeshaye Industrial Estate. It also runs alongside the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Finally, Pendle Water joins the River Calder in Reedley Hallows. This area is northwest of Burnley. Pendle Water used to provide water to a treatment plant in Burnley.
Lomeshaye Marsh: A Special Wetland
At Lomeshaye, an industrial area was built. This changed the river's path. Part of the old river route still gets water from Edge End Brook. Since the early 1990s, this area has been turned into a wetland. A wetland is a special area of land that is covered by water, like a marsh or swamp. There are not many wetlands like this along Pendle Water.
Many local groups helped bring this area back to life. The Lomeshaye Marsh Preservation Group worked with the Environment Agency. They helped restore the site. This means they made it healthy and natural again.
This wetland is now a Local nature reserve. This means it's a protected place for nature. It's also a County Biological Heritage Site. This shows how important it is for plants and animals. A local special school, Pendle Community College, helped with this project. They even won an award in 2009 for their hard work!
