Penion ormesi is a very large species of sea snail or whelk. These snails are predators, meaning they hunt other animals for food. They are a type of gastropod mollusc that lives in the marine (ocean) environment. They belong to the family called Buccinidae, which are known as the true whelks.
About Penion ormesi
Penion ormesi is a large type of siphon whelk. These snails live on the ocean floor, usually in soft sand or mud. They are found on the continental shelf, which is the part of a continent that extends underwater from the coastline.
Scientists have used genetics and studied the shape of their shells to learn more about them. They found that a snail once thought to be a different species, called Penion cuvierianus jeakingsi, is actually the same as Penion ormesi. This means they are now considered the same species. However, there might be even more types of these snails that scientists haven't fully discovered yet.

Where Penion ormesi Lives
This species is only found in New Zealand, which means it is endemic there. You can find Penion ormesi in the Cook Strait and off the west coast of the South Island. Scientists have also found fossils of this snail in Whanganui, showing they have lived in the area for a long time.
