Penn (also called Lauren) is a small, quiet place in North Dakota, USA. It's not a city or a town with its own government. Instead, it's an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and buildings without a separate local government. Penn is located in western Ramsey County. It's near U.S. Route 2, a main road. The community is northwest of Devils Lake, which is the main city in Ramsey County. Penn sits about 1,467 feet (447 meters) above sea level. It has its own post office with the ZIP code 58362.
Long ago, this community was first named Lauren. It was named after the person who owned the land where the community started. Later, its name was changed to Penn. This new name was chosen because of English investors, or "stockholders," who were involved.
Devils Lake and Flooding
Penn is very close to a large body of water called Devils Lake. This lake has been growing bigger over time. Because the lake is expanding, some parts of Penn have been bought by the government. This is happening to protect people and property from future flood waters. It is expected that the lake will eventually cover parts of the community.
Getting Around
The Amtrak train, called the Empire Builder, travels through Penn. This train goes between cities like Seattle and Portland on one side, and Chicago on the other. The train uses tracks owned by BNSF. However, the Empire Builder train does not stop in Penn. The closest train station is about 13 miles (21 kilometers) away. You can find this station in the city of Devils Lake.
