Penn Yan is a village located in Yates County, New York, in the United States. It is the main town, also known as the county seat, for Yates County. In 2020, about 5,056 people lived there.

Penn Yan is found at the northern end of the east branch of Keuka Lake. This lake is one of the beautiful Finger Lakes in New York. The village is also home to The Birkett Mills, one of the oldest mills in the U.S., which started in 1797.

Most of Penn Yan is in the Town of Milo. Smaller parts are in the Town of Benton and the Town of Jerusalem. The Penn Yan Airport is just south of the village. The name "Penn Yan" comes from "Pennsylvania Yankee," because many early settlers were from those areas. The village is also where the Penn Yan Central School District is located.

History of Penn Yan

The first house in Penn Yan was built in 1799. The village became the county seat in 1823. This happened when Yates County was officially created. Penn Yan became an incorporated village in 1833.

Early Settlers and the Village Name

The first people to settle here were followers of a religious leader known as the Public Universal Friend. This person was born in Rhode Island and started a settlement called Jerusalem in 1789. Many followers moved there and lived near Keuka Lake.

The name "Penn Yan" was created from "Pennsylvania" and "Yankee." This is because many of the first settlers came from Pennsylvania and New England. People from New England were often called Yankees. Penn Yan became a busy trading center for the farms around it. It had mills for wood, buckwheat, and other grains. The village was also the end point of the old Crooked Lake Canal.

Penn Yan Boat Company

In 1921, a German immigrant named Charles A. Herrman started the Penn Yan Boat Company. This company made boats out of wood and later out of fiberglass. It continued making boats until 2001.

Farming and New Communities

In the late 1800s and mid-1900s, Penn Yan and the areas around Yates County had many dairy farms. Many Danish immigrants and their families settled here. Even today, you might hear names like Christensen and Jensen.

Since the late 1900s, Old Order Mennonite and Amish families have moved to the area. They have taken over many farms. Many Mennonite families came from Pennsylvania starting in 1974. They were looking for more affordable farmland. The Yates County Old Order Mennonite community is now the largest "horse-and-buggy" community in New York State. There are also Amish communities nearby.
