Penny is a popular chain of supermarkets, especially known for offering products at lower prices. It's a German company, but you can find its stores in many countries. Penny is also known as Penny Market in some places.
The first Penny store opened in 1973. It was started by a group called Leibbrand Gruppe. Later, in 1989, a bigger company called Rewe Group took full ownership of Penny. This means Penny is now part of the Rewe Group family of businesses.
Over the years, Penny has grown a lot. It has expanded to many countries across Europe. For example, in 2005, the Penny stores in France became part of the Carrefour Group. By 2010, Penny had about 3,000 stores in six different European countries.
Today, Penny stores are in countries like Germany, Austria, Hungary, Italy, Czech Republic, and Romania. They used to be in Bulgaria too, but they left that market in 2015. Penny continues to be a big name in discount shopping across Europe.
