The People's Party of Canada (PPC), also known as the French: Parti Populaire du Canada in French, is a federal political party in Canada. A federal political party is a group of people who share similar ideas about how the country should be run. They work together to elect their members to the government.
This party was started by Maxime Bernier on September 14, 2018. He created the party shortly after he left the Conservative Party of Canada, where he had been a prominent member.
The People's Party of Canada has several main ideas that guide its policies. These include being conservative, libertarian, populist, and classical liberal. It is generally considered a right-wing party.
- Conservative means they often believe in traditional values and want to keep things stable.
- Libertarian means they believe in a lot of personal freedom and less government control.
- Populist means they often try to appeal directly to ordinary people, saying they represent the common person against the "elite."
- Classical liberal means they support individual rights, free markets, and limited government.
- Right-wing is a way to describe political views that are often more traditional and focus on individual responsibility and less government involvement.
Maxime Bernier was the only Member of Parliament for the People's Party of Canada. A Member of Parliament (MP) is a person elected to represent a specific area, called a "riding," in the Canadian Parliament. Bernier represented the riding of Beauce from 2006 until the 2019 Canadian federal election.
