Peoria is a small community in Linn County, Oregon, United States. It is known as an unincorporated community and a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's a group of homes that isn't officially a town or city, but the government counts its population.

Peoria is located on the east side of the Willamette River. It sits about 141 miles up the river from where it meets another body of water. You can find it between the cities of Eugene and Corvallis. Peoria is mostly a cluster of houses and a county park along Peoria Road. It's about 8 miles south of Oregon Route 34 and 12 miles north of Harrisburg. As of 2020, about 103 people lived in Peoria.

A Look Back at Peoria

Peoria was named after Peoria, Illinois. The first person to settle here was H. A. McCartney in 1851. By 1875, the community was doing quite well. It had four large buildings to store grain and a school with 60 students.

However, things changed when the Oregon and California Railroad built a train line. This new line went through Shedd and Halsey, which are further east. Because of the railroad, less business came to Peoria, and the community started to decline.

A post office opened in this area in 1855. It was first called "Burlington." The name was changed to "Peoria" in 1857, but the post office closed in 1900. For many years in the early 1900s, a river ferry helped people cross the Willamette River from Peoria.
