Pepe Carvalho is a made-up detective who stars in many novels. These books were written by Manuel Vázquez Montalbán.

Pepe Carvalho's Story

Pepe Carvalho is a very interesting and sometimes surprising character. Through his adventures, the author shows and often comments on what was happening in Spanish society. This includes political and cultural changes during the late 1900s.

For example, one book, Asesinato en el Comité Central (Murder in the Central Committee), talks about the Communist Party during Spain's move to democracy. Another book, El Premio (The Prize), is set during the time when Felipe González was no longer the leader in the 1990s. Also, Sabotaje Olímpico (An Olympic Death) shows the big changes in Barcelona when the Olympic Games happened there in 1992.

The story of Pepe Carvalho ended with the book Milenio Carvalho (Carvalho Millennium). This book was published after the author passed away. In it, Pepe and his friend Biscuter go on one last big trip around the world. It's a thoughtful look at the world's situation and how time passes.

Fun Facts About Pepe Carvalho

  • When he was younger, Carvalho had a varied past. He held different political beliefs and even worked for a secret agency.
  • Carvalho and Biscuter love food, just like the author did! So, every book has exciting descriptions of many different meals.
  • Carvalho is very smart and knows a lot. But a surprising thing he does is often use books from his huge library to start fires.
  • Even though he was born in Galicia, Barcelona is his true home. Carvalho travels a lot for his cases, but his stories have made Barcelona a famous literary city, much like how he admires Singapore from other books.

Pepe Carvalho on Screen

Many of Carvalho's novels have been made into TV shows. However, these shows were not as popular as the books.

  • In 1986, a TV series with eight parts was made by TVE. It starred Eusebio Poncela as Carvalho.
  • Later, a show made by both Argentina and Spain started, with Juan Diego as Carvalho. But it was stopped after only one episode.
  • In 1999, an Italian-Spanish TV show with ten parts was made, starring Juanjo Puigcorbé.

Carvalho's stories have also been made into movies four times:

  • Tatuaje (Tattoo, 1976), directed by Bigas Luna, starred Carlos Esteban.
  • Asesinato en el Comité Central (Murder in the Central Committee, 1983), directed by Vicente Aranda, had Patxi Andión playing the detective.
  • El laberinto griego (The Greek labyrinth, 1990), by Rafael Alcázar, starred Omero Antonutti. In this movie, the character's name was changed from Carvalho to Bardón.
  • Los mares del sur (The Southern Seas, 1991), by Manuel Esteban, featured Juan Luis Galiardo as Carvalho.
