PepsiAmericas, Inc. was a big company that bottled (or put into bottles) many popular drinks like Pepsi-Cola. It was the second-largest company in the world that did this for PepsiCo, which owns the Pepsi brand. PepsiAmericas also bottled drinks for other companies, such as Dr Pepper Snapple Group.
This company had 19 bottling factories across the United States. It also operated in 11 countries in Central and Eastern Europe, and 5 countries in the Caribbean. PepsiAmericas had its main office in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
By early 2009, PepsiCo owned about 41% of PepsiAmericas. On April 20, 2009, PepsiCo offered to buy the rest of the company. In August 2009, PepsiCo also made an offer to buy The Pepsi Bottling Group, which was the world's largest Pepsi bottler.
On February 26, 2010, after getting approval from regulators, PepsiCo finished buying both bottling companies. These two companies then became a new part of PepsiCo, called the Pepsi Beverages Company.
The Story of PepsiAmericas
In the year 2000, a company called Whitman Corp. bought PepsiAmericas. Whitman Corp. was also a Pepsi bottler. After the purchase, the combined company decided to use the name PepsiAmericas.
Whitman Corp. actually started out as a railroad company called the Illinois Central Railroad. Over time, it changed its business focus. It moved away from railroads and started bottling Pepsi drinks. The company changed its name a few times:
- In 1962, it became Illinois Central Industries.
- In 1975, it changed to IC Industries.
- Finally, in 1988, it became Whitman Corp.
This shows how a company can change and grow into different types of businesses over many years!
