Percy Sholto Douglas, 10th Marquess of Queensberry (born October 13, 1868 – died August 1, 1920) was a Scottish nobleman. A nobleman is a person from a high-ranking family.

He was born in Cummertrees, Dumfries, Scotland. Percy was the second son of the 9th Marquess of Queensberry. He was also the brother of Lord Alfred Douglas. From 1894, after his older brother Francis died, until his father's death in 1900, he was known as Viscount Drumlanrig.

Early Life and Adventures

When he was young, Percy Douglas served in the Royal Navy as a midshipman. This was a junior officer rank. Later, he joined the British Army as a second lieutenant. He was part of the 3rd Battalion of the King's Own Scottish Borderers from 1889 to 1891.

After his military service, Percy went to Kalgoorlie, Australia. He became a gold prospector during the gold rush that started in 1893. This means he searched for gold. Later, he managed a road house in Canada. A road house was a place where travelers could stop for food and rest.

Returning to London and Later Career

Percy Douglas eventually returned to London. There, he tried some business ventures that did not succeed. In 1911, he moved to the United States. He worked as a reporter for newspapers in New York City and Chicago.

Relationship with His Father

Percy Douglas had a difficult relationship with his father. His father once called him "that so-called skunk of a son of mine." In 1893, Percy married a clergyman's daughter. His father did not approve of this marriage at first. However, they later made up when Percy returned from Australia.

In 1900, when his father was dying, he showed his disapproval of Percy. After his father's funeral, Percy and his brother Lord Alfred visited Oscar Wilde in Paris.

Marriages and Children

Percy Douglas was married two times.

  • Firstly, he married Anna Maria, known as "Minnie," on September 11, 1893. Minnie was the daughter of Reverend Thomas Walters. She was born in 1866 and passed away on April 25, 1917. They had three children:
  • Dorothy Madeline Douglas, born on July 5, 1894. She married Esmond Brasnell Palmer in 1924.
  • Francis Archibald Kelhead Douglas, born on January 17, 1896. He later became the 11th Marquess of Queensberry.
  • Cecil Charles Douglas, born on December 27, 1898.
  • Secondly, he married Mary Louise on December 4, 1918. Mary was the daughter of Richard Bickel. She was also the widow of Ernest Morgan. Percy and Mary did not have any children together. Mary passed away on April 4, 1956.

Percy Sholto Douglas died on August 1, 1920, in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was 51 years old. His oldest son, Francis, became the 11th Marquess of Queensberry. Percy was buried in England at Kensal Green Cemetery in London.
