Sir Percy Edward Kent (born March 18, 1913 – died July 9, 1986) was an important British geologist. Geologists study the Earth's rocks, land, and history. Sir Percy won several big awards for his work, including the Royal Medal in 1971. He also received the Bigsby Medal in 1955 and the Murchison Medal in 1969. In 1973, he was given the special title of Knight Bachelor, which means he could be called "Sir."

Early Life and Education
Percy Kent grew up in England. He went to West Bridgford Grammar School for his early education. After that, he studied at the University of Nottingham. He earned a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in 1934. Later, he completed his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in 1941. These degrees showed his deep knowledge in his field.
A Career in Geology
Sir Percy Kent had a long and successful career exploring the Earth.
Exploring Olduvai Gorge
In 1935, he joined famous scientists Louis Leakey and Mary Leakey. They were investigating Olduvai Gorge in Africa. This place is very important for finding early human fossils.
Leading Geologist at BP
From 1966 to 1971, Sir Percy was the Chief Geologist for BP. This is a large energy company. In this role, he led many projects related to finding oil and gas underground.
President of Geological Societies
Sir Percy was also a leader in the geology community.
- From 1969 to 1970, he was the President of the Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union. He had already been a geology officer there.
- Later, from 1974 to 1976, he served as the President of the Geological Society of London. This is a very old and respected group for geologists.
Family Life
Percy Kent married Margaret (Betty) Hood in 1940. They had two daughters together. One of their daughters is Helen Cooper, who became a well-known literary scholar. Sadly, his first wife, Margaret, passed away in 1974. In 1976, Sir Percy married Lorna Scott. He lived in West Bridgford, England, for most of his life.
