Early Life and Family

Peregrine Hoby was the son of Sir Edward Hoby of Bisham Abbey in Berkshire. His father was a well-known figure and a favorite of King James I. Peregrine was raised by his father and later became his heir.

His grandfather was Sir Thomas Hoby, who served as the English Ambassador to France. Peregrine attended Eton College, a famous school, from 1612 to 1616. After his father passed away in 1617, Peregrine was placed under the care of George Abbot, who was the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Political Career

In 1640, Peregrine Hoby became the High Sheriff of Berkshire. This was an important local role, like a chief law enforcement officer for the county.

Later that year, in November 1640, he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Great Marlow. An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in the national Parliament. He served in the Long Parliament. In December 1648, he was removed from Parliament.

He was elected again as an MP for Great Marlow in 1659, serving in the Third Protectorate Parliament. He was also elected to the Convention Parliament in 1660 and the Cavalier Parliament in 1661. He continued to serve as an MP until 1679. He passed away later that same year at the age of 76.

Personal Life and Descendants

On April 14, 1631, Peregrine Hoby married Katherine Doddington. She was the daughter of Sir William Doddington of Breamore House in Hampshire. Peregrine and Katherine had four sons and one daughter.

Their children included:

  • Sir Edward Hoby, 1st Baronet (1634–1675): He was Peregrine's eldest son. King Charles II made him a baronet in 1666.
  • Sir John Hoby, 2nd Baronet (1635–1702): He became the second baronet after his brother.
  • Philip Hoby (around 1640–1678)
  • Thomas Hoby (1642–1706): He also became an MP for Great Marlow and Salisbury.

Peregrine Hoby died on May 6, 1679. Since his eldest son, Edward, had passed away before him in 1675, Peregrine's second son, John, inherited his title and lands.

Later Generations

Peregrine's grandson, Sir Thomas Hoby, 3rd Baronet (1685–1730), served as the High Sheriff of Hampshire in 1715. His great-grandsons were Sir Thomas Hoby, 4th Baronet (around 1714–1744) and the Rev. Sir Philip Hoby, 5th Baronet (around 1716–1766). Both of them died without marrying, and so the baronetcy (a special title) ended.
