Pedro Pubill Calaf (born March 24, 1935 – died August 27, 2014), better known as Peret, was a famous Spanish Romani singer, guitar player, and composer. He was from Mataró, a city near Barcelona, Spain. Peret was a master of Catalan rumba, a lively music style.

He became very well known for his song "Borriquito" in 1971. Peret also represented Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest 1974 with his song "Canta y sé feliz". A big moment in his career was performing at the closing ceremony of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. In 2001, he released an album called Rey De La Rumba (which means King of the Rumba). This album featured new versions of his old songs, with guest musicians like David Byrne from the band Talking Heads.

In 1982, Peret decided to take a break from music. He joined a religious community of Spanish Romani people called the Iglesia Evangélica de Filadelfia. For several years, he focused only on preaching and religious activities. He returned to music in 1991 and started recording new albums again. In 1992, he was honored for his amazing work when he sang at the Olympic Games in Barcelona.

Peret passed away in Barcelona in 2014 at the age of 79, after battling lung cancer.

Peret's Music Style: Catalan Rumba

Peret was a pioneer of Catalan rumba. This music style mixes traditional Romani music with other sounds like Cuban rhythms and rock and roll. It often features fast guitar playing, clapping, and energetic singing. Peret's unique way of playing the guitar, known as the "Peret beat," helped define this genre. He made the Catalan rumba popular not just in Spain, but around the world.

His Albums and Popular Songs

Peret released many albums throughout his career. Some of his early albums include Peret (1967) and Rumba pa'ti (1968). His album Borriquito (1971) became very famous because of the hit song with the same name.

Later in his career, he released albums like No se pué aguantar (1991) and Rey de la Rumba (2000). Even after he passed away, an album called Des del Respecte / Desde el Respeto was released in 2014.

Some of his most famous songs include:

  • "Borriquito" (1971)
  • "Voy voy" (1971)
  • "Ni fu ni fa" (1972)
  • "El mosquito" (1973)
  • "Canta y sé feliz" (1974)
