How Perfume Started
Perfume began in early 2000 at a special school for young talents. This school was called Actor's School Hiroshima. Their first song, "Omajinai Perori", came out on March 21, 2002. This song was only released in Hiroshima.
A year later, the group moved to Tokyo. There, they started working with Capsule's producer, Yasutaka Nakata. On August 6, 2003, they released their first single that was available across Japan. It was called "Sweet Donuts". In 2005, they signed a big record deal with Tokuma Japan Communications. Their first official single with this major label was "Linear Motor Girl", released on September 21.
Rising to Fame
Perfume became very famous in Japan around 2008. This happened when their seventh single, "Polyrhythm", was released. The song was chosen as the theme for a recycling campaign by NHK, a big TV channel in Japan.
"Polyrhythm" reached number seven on the Oricon charts. This was like a music popularity list in Japan. It was their first song to be in the Top 10. Since then, all their songs and albums have been in the top 5 of the charts.
Their first studio album, Game, came out on April 16, 2008. It became their first album to reach number one in Japan. Their song "Love the World", released on July 9, 2008, was their first number one single. Overall, Perfume has sold more than 5 million records (songs and albums combined).
Perfume's Unique Sound
Perfume's music started with a unique pop sound. Later, they moved towards modern electronic dance music. This style includes elements of synthpop, bubblegum pop, dance-pop, techno, and house music.
The group is also known for their special vocal sound. They use computer tools like autotune and vocoders. These tools make their voices sound unique and processed. Perfume has become one of the most successful music groups in Asia. Their music style is often called technopop.
Going Global
In 2012, Perfume announced a big step. They signed a worldwide contract with Universal Music Group. This meant they wanted to reach fans all over the world. Their sixteenth major single, "Spending All My Time", came out on August 15, 2012. Many people saw this song as a special message for their fans outside Japan.
Their fourth studio album, Level 3, was released on October 2, 2013. After that, "Sweet Refrain" came out a month later. This song was the main single for their fifth album, Cosmic Explorer, which was released on April 6, 2016. Rolling Stone magazine even named Cosmic Explorer one of the "20 Best Pop Albums of 2016". Their sixth studio album, Future Pop, was released on August 15, 2018.
