Perkins is a small, unincorporated community located in Delta County, Michigan, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of a larger area called Baldwin Township. You can find Perkins along a road called M-35, about 9 miles (14 kilometers) northwest of a town named Gladstone. Perkins even has its own post office with the ZIP code 49872.
A Look Back at Perkins' History
Perkins started as a community around the year 1872. It was founded by a group called the Cascade Company. This company was busy making charcoal in special ovens called kilns. They also cut down trees to get lumber in the area.
Early Location and Transportation
The community was first located near the Whitefish Branch of the Chicago and North Western Railway. This railway was important for moving goods and people in those days.
The Post Office and Naming Perkins
A post office opened in Perkins on May 7, 1894. The very first person in charge of the mail there was John Fuhriman. The community was named after an early settler in the area, a man named Josiah Perkins.
