Website Municipality of Perquenco

Perquenco is a small town and a commune (which is like a local government area) in the southern part of Chile. It's located in the Cautín Province, within the Araucanía Region.

Long ago, a French adventurer named Orélie-Antoine de Tounens declared Perquenco the capital of his "Kingdom of Araucanía and Patagonia." However, this kingdom was not recognized by other countries. Soon after, the Chilean army, led by Cornelio Saavedra Rodríguez, took control of the area as part of Chile's expansion into the Araucanía region.

Understanding Perquenco's Population

To learn about the people living in Perquenco, we can look at a census. A census is like a big survey that counts everyone and gathers information about them.

How Many People Live Here?

According to the 2002 census by the National Statistics Institute, Perquenco had 6,450 people living there. Out of these, 3,281 were men and 3,169 were women.

Where Do People Live?

  • Rural areas: These are countryside areas, often with farms or smaller villages. About 3,521 people (54.6%) lived in the rural parts of the commune.

Local Leadership: The Alcalde

The commune is run by a municipal council. The leader of this council is called an alcalde, which is similar to a mayor. The people of Perquenco directly vote for their alcalde every four years. From 2008 to 2012, the alcalde was Luis Alberto Muñoz Pérez, who belonged to the PDC.

People in Perquenco also vote for representatives who work in the national government in Chile's capital.

  • Chamber of Deputies: This is like one part of the country's parliament. Perquenco is part of a larger area (the 49th electoral district) that elects members to the Chamber of Deputies.
  • Senate: This is the other part of the country's parliament. Perquenco is part of the 14th senatorial constituency, which elects members to the Senate.
