Peter Killian Gallagher (born August 19, 1955) is an American actor and singer. He has been acting in Hollywood films since 1980. Many people know him best for playing Sandy Cohen in the TV show The O.C. from 2003 to 2007.
He has also had important roles in other TV series. These include Deputy Chief William Dodds on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Nick on the Netflix show Grace and Frankie. Peter Gallagher is also famous for his roles in movies like American Beauty (1999) and Mr. Deeds (2002). On stage, he is well-known for playing Sky Masterson in the 1992 Broadway show Guys and Dolls.
Early Life and Education
Peter Gallagher was born in New York City. He grew up in Armonk, New York. His mother, Mary Ann, was a scientist who studied bacteria. His father, Thomas Francis Gallagher, Jr., worked in advertising. Peter is the youngest of their three children.
He went to Tufts University. There, he was very active in theater. He performed in plays like Stephen Sondheim's Company. He also sang with an all-male singing group called the Beelzebubs. After college, he continued to study acting at the William Esper Studio.

Peter Gallagher started his acting career on Broadway. He appeared with famous actress Glenn Close in a play called The Real Thing. His first movie role was in the film The Idolmaker. He also starred as Sky Masterson in the popular 1992 Broadway show Guys and Dolls.
He played many different characters in movies. He was a business rival in The Player (1992). He played the comatose fiancé of Sandra Bullock in While You Were Sleeping (1995). In American Beauty (1999), he was a real estate agent. He also played a media executive in Mr. Deeds (2002).
From 2003 to 2007, Gallagher starred as Sandy Cohen in the Fox TV show The O.C. His character was a lawyer who helped people. In honor of this role, Peter Gallagher hosts an event called "The Sandy Cohen Awards." This event gives a scholarship to a law student at UC Berkeley who wants to become a public defender.
In 2005, Peter Gallagher released a music album called 7 Days in Memphis. It included a song called "Don't Give Up On Me." This song was also featured in an episode of The O.C.

Peter Gallagher is married to Paula Harwood. They have two children, a son named James and a daughter named Kathryn. His daughter Kathryn is also an actress and singer.
