Peter Gammons (born April 9, 1945) is a well-known American sports writer and TV personality. He is famous for his work covering baseball, especially Major League Baseball. He received the J. G. Taylor Spink Award for his excellent baseball writing. This award is given by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Early Life and School

Peter Gammons was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He grew up in Groton, Massachusetts. He went to Groton School and finished there in 1965. After that, he studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While in college, he worked for the student newspaper, The Daily Tar Heel. He also worked at the student radio station, WXYC.

Peter Gammons' Career

Starting as a Print Journalist

After college in 1969, Peter Gammons started his career as a journalist. He began working at The Boston Globe newspaper. For many years, he was the main writer covering the Boston Red Sox baseball team. He also wrote for Sports Illustrated, where he covered baseball, hockey, and college basketball. In the 1980s, he wrote a column for The Sporting News.

Peter Gammons has also written several books about baseball. One of his books is called Beyond the Sixth Game.

Moving to Television

In 1988, Peter Gammons joined ESPN, a big sports TV channel. He became an expert analyst in the studio. During baseball season, he appeared on shows like Baseball Tonight and SportsCenter. He also wrote articles for ESPN.com and ESPN The Magazine.

In 2006, he became a reporter for ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball. He reported from the field during games. After 20 years at ESPN, he decided to leave in 2009. He wanted to try new things and have a less busy schedule.
