Peter Gunning's Life and Career
Peter Gunning was born in 1614 in a place called Hoo St Werburgh in Kent, England. He went to school at The King's School, Canterbury and then studied at Clare College, Cambridge. He became a fellow there in 1633, which meant he was a senior member of the college.
Supporting the King
Peter Gunning became a priest and was a strong supporter of the King during the English Civil War. This war was fought between those who supported King Charles I (called Royalists) and those who supported the Parliament. Peter Gunning was a very good speaker and used his sermons to encourage people to support the Royalist side.
In 1644, during the war, he moved to Oxford. He worked as a chaplain at New College until Oxford surrendered to the Parliament's forces in 1646. After the war, he continued to work as a chaplain for important Royalist families.
After the War
When the King was restored to power in 1660 (this event is called the Restoration), Peter Gunning's career really took off. He was made a canon of Canterbury Cathedral. This was a big honor.
In the same year, he went back to Cambridge University. He became the head of Corpus Christi College. He was also given an important teaching role as the Lady Margaret's Professor of Divinity. He also received church jobs in two villages, Cottesmore, Rutland and Stoke Bruerne, Northamptonshire.
Becoming a Bishop
In 1661, Peter Gunning became the head of another college, St John's College, Cambridge. He was also chosen as the Regius Professor of Divinity, which is a very important teaching position at the university. He helped to develop a certain way of thinking about religious ideas at Cambridge.
In 1669, Peter Gunning became a Bishop for the area of Chichester. A few years later, in 1674–1675, he was moved to become the Bishop of Ely. He was known for having balanced religious views. He didn't like the strict ideas of the Puritans, but he also didn't agree with Roman Catholicism.
