About Sir Peter Studd

Peter Malden Studd was born on September 15, 1916. His father, Brigadier Malden A. Studd, worked for King George VI.

Sir Peter's Time as Lord Mayor

Sir Peter Studd served as the Lord Mayor of the City of London from 1970 to 1971. Before this, he was an executive at De La Rue, a company that prints banknotes. When he was younger, he was a very good cricketer. He even led the cricket teams at both Harrow School and Cambridge University.

London Bridge's New Home

During his time as Lord Mayor, a special event happened. The old London Bridge, built in 1831, was reopened in a new place. It had been sold for over £1 million and moved all the way to Lake Havasu City, Arizona, in America. It became the main attraction of a new town there.

Sir Peter had been involved with the bridge's move earlier. In 1967, he attended the ceremony to lay the foundation stone. In October 1970, he went back to Arizona for the grand opening. He wore his full official clothes and joined the state governor for the celebration. There was even a special parade, just like the Lord Mayor's procession in London!

Family Connections

Sir Peter Studd was related to the famous Studd brothers. They were all excellent cricketers who captained the Cambridge team. One of them, Kynaston Studd, was also a Lord Mayor of London. Like his relative, Sir Peter was a governor of the Regent Street Polytechnic. This school is now part of the University of Westminster.

Sir Peter also continued a long family tradition by becoming a master of the Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors. This is an old and important guild in London. He was also an active member of Freemasonry, another long-standing family connection.

Sir Peter Studd held many important positions during his life. He helped lead several organizations.

  • Vice-president of the Arts Educational Schools
  • Governor of Harrow, a famous school
  • Chairman of King George's Jubilee Trust

Special Honours and Recognition

Sir Peter was made a knight in 1969. This means he was given the title "Sir." In 1971, he received an even higher honour, becoming a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE).

Later, in 1979, he was made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO). This was to recognize his work for the Prince's Trust, a charity that helps young people. In 1983, he became a Deputy Lieutenant for Wiltshire.

Sir Peter's Legacy

Sir Peter Studd hoped to be remembered for his efforts to save St Paul's Cathedral. This famous building in London had been damaged over time. The roof and walls were suffering from age and the constant shaking from London traffic.

Saving St Paul's Cathedral

During his time as Lord Mayor, Sir Peter helped raise £3 million for the project. This was a major highlight of his year in office. His fundraising was very successful. He even convinced President Richard Nixon of America to support the project.

Money came in from many places, including a $10 donation from an American who had visited the cathedral in 1917. This shows how much people cared about saving the historic building.

Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, attended a special event at Mansion House. This celebration honoured Sir Peter just before he finished his term as Lord Mayor.
