Sir Ian Bowater's Life and Work
Sir Ian Frank Bowater was the youngest son of Sir Frank Bowater. His father was also a Lord Mayor of London, serving from 1938 to 1939. Ian went to famous schools like Eton College and Magdalen College, Oxford at the University of Oxford.
Serving His Country
Before World War II began in 1939, Sir Ian was chosen as one of the King's Lieutenants for the City of London. During the war, he served bravely in the Territorial Army. He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Artillery. This means he was a high-ranking officer in charge of big guns. For his excellent service, he received two special awards: the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in 1945 and the Territorial Decoration (TD).
Becoming Lord Mayor
After the war, Sir Ian continued to serve the City of London. In 1965, he became a Sheriff of the City of London. This is another important role in the city's government. In 1967, he was made a Knight Bachelor, which means he was given the title "Sir."
From 1969 to 1970, Sir Ian served as the Lord Mayor of London. This is a very old and respected position. As Lord Mayor, he helped lead the City of London and represent it to the world. In 1970, he received more honors, including being made a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE). He also received an award from Austria for his services.
Sir Ian was also involved in business. He became the chairman of Bowater Hotels, which owned several hotels.
Family Life
On December 10, 1927, Sir Ian married Ursula Margaret Dawson. They had four children together: three daughters and one son. You might know one of his grandchildren, the famous actor Damian Lewis.
