Peter Alfred Toogood (born April 11, 1930 – died June 5, 2019) was a famous amateur golfer from Tasmania, Australia. An amateur golfer plays for fun, not for money. Peter won the Australian Amateur golf tournament in 1954. He also won the Tasmanian Open eight times! In 1954, he was the best amateur golfer at The Open Championship. He was also part of the Australian team that won the first-ever Eisenhower Trophy in 1958.

Peter's Early Life

Peter Toogood was born in North Adelaide, South Australia, on April 11, 1930. His dad, Alf Toogood, was also a professional golfer. This means his dad played golf for a living. Peter's grandfather, Alfred Toogood, Sr., was also a golfer.

When Peter was just 8 years old, he made a "hole-in-one" at the Kingston Beach Golf Club. This is when you hit the ball directly into the hole from the tee!

Peter's Golf Career

Peter Toogood was a top amateur golfer for many years. He was the best amateur at the Australian Open in 1950, 1952, 1955, and 1957. In 1954, he was also the best amateur at The Open Championship, a very famous golf tournament.

Earlier in 1954, he played in the Amateur Championship. He made it to the final 16 players. He lost a very close game to Joe Carr after playing extra holes.

Peter won the 1954 Australian Amateur tournament. He actually beat his own brother, John, in the final game! This led to a famous newspaper headline: "Toogood Was Too Good For Toogood."

In 1958, Peter was chosen to play for Australia in the first Eisenhower Trophy. This is a big international team golf competition. Australia beat the United States by two strokes in a playoff to win the trophy. Peter's score of 71 in the third round was the best score of anyone in the whole competition.

Peter won the Tasmanian Open eight times. He won it in 1949 and 1951. Then he won it six years in a row from 1954 to 1959. He also won the New Zealand Amateur in 1956. He beat famous golfer Bob Charles in the final match.

Peter's Family

Peter's father, Alf Toogood, was born in England in 1895. He moved to Australia around 1919. In 1936, he moved to Tasmania and became the golf professional at the Kingston Beach Club.

Alf Toogood also won the Tasmanian Open twice, in 1938 and 1950. In 1950, Peter Toogood actually finished second behind his own father in that tournament!

Awards and Special Recognitions

Peter Toogood received two important awards for his contributions. In 1980, he was given the Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE). In 2006, he was appointed Member of the Order of Australia (AM). These awards recognize people who have done great things for their country.

Peter also helped start the Australasian Golf Museum in 1993. This museum is located in Bothwell, Tasmania. It helps tell the story of golf in Australia and New Zealand.
