Peters Glacier is a huge river of ice located in Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska, a state in the U.S.. This amazing glacier is also sometimes called Hanna Glacier or Hudeetsedle Toyaane. It flows through a deep valley, starting from a large area of ice called the Peters Basin icefield.

Peters Glacier: A Giant River of Ice

A glacier is like a very slow-moving river made of ice. Peters Glacier is found north of a famous part of Denali mountain called Wickersham Wall. It flows between Denali and a peak known as Peters Dome.

Where Peters Glacier Flows

The glacier begins its journey by falling from the icefield. This happens at a spot called the Tluna Icefall. As it moves, another glacier, the Jeffery Glacier, joins it. Peters Glacier then leaves the Alaska Range mountains towards the north. It becomes the starting point for the Muddy River.

How Peters Glacier Got Its Name

Peters Glacier was named by a person named A.H. Brooks. He named it after William John Peters. William Peters was a topographer, which means he was a mapmaker. He worked for the United States Geological Survey, a U.S. government science agency. William Peters explored and mapped parts of Alaska between 1898 and 1902.

Before 1947, this glacier had a different name: Hanna Glacier. It was named after Marcus Alonzo Hanna. He was a U.S. Senator from Ohio. A U.S. Senator is a politician who helps make laws for the country. Marcus Hanna was also a friend of President William McKinley, who was the leader of the United States at that time.
