The History of Petroleros de Salamanca
The Petroleros de Salamanca football club has a long and interesting history. It started way back in the 1950s. The team has faced many challenges, including financial difficulties. But they always found a way to return to the field.
Early Years and First Break (1958-1986)
The club was founded in the 1950s. In 1958, they joined the Segunda División de México, which is the second division of Mexican football. Back then, they were called Mapaches.
The team played in the second division until 1961. They had to stop playing because of money problems. But the club didn't stay away for long. In 1964, they came back to the second division.
A local oil company owned the team this time. They brought in some famous players. Even with great players, the team never made it to the first division. The club played for many years as Petroleros de Salamanca. In 1986, they stopped playing again. This time, they were gone for a long time.
The Awaited Return (2001-2009)
In 2001, the same oil company that owned the team before started new professional sports clubs. First, they started a basketball team in 2001. It was also called Petroleros de Salamanca.
The football club finally returned in 2004. They quickly joined the Primera A, which was a higher division. In 2006, the team reached their first final in the Primera A. However, they lost to Puebla FC in a penalty shootout.
The club played for six more tournaments. Then, the team was sold and moved to La Piedad, Michoacán. It became a new team called C.F. La Piedad.
Attempts to Return to Liga Premier (2013-2022)
In 2013, the team tried to come back as Salamanca F.C.. They spent several years in the Third Division of Mexico. They tried hard but couldn't get promoted to a higher league.
On July 3, 2019, the team tried to join the Liga Premier de México (Second Division) – Serie B. They made a deal with another team, Real Potosino. The plan was for Real Potosino to move to Salamanca and become Salamanca F.C. But on July 18, 2019, the Mexican Football Federation did not approve the change. So, Salamanca stayed in the lower league, and Real Potosino stopped playing.
In 2020, the club faced more money problems. The team's owners rented out their team to another group. This group was a soccer development center. In 2021, the rental deal ended, and the team officially stopped playing again.
In 2022, the team returned to professional leagues. They were renamed C.F. Salamanca. This team was dissolved at the end of the 2022–23 season. This happened because a new project arrived in the city.
Official Return to Liga Premier (2023)
On January 27, 2023, another team called Catedráticos Elite F.C. moved from Ameca, Jalisco to Salamanca, Guanajuato. This move happened because Catedráticos Elite F.C. merged with Petroleros de Salamanca. The local oil industry wanted a professional team in the city.
Because of this, the team was unofficially called Catedráticos Petroleros. Finally, on June 30, 2023, the team officially got back the name Petroleros de Salamanca. However, for official reasons, the team was formally renamed Petroleros de Salamanca Catedráticos F.C.
Team Badges Through the Years
Football clubs often use special badges or crests. These badges help people recognize the team. Petroleros de Salamanca has had a few different badges over the years.
In the early 1950s, clubs often used their city's crest. So, Salamanca used the city crest from 1958 to 1961. In the early 1970s, the club used a crest that showed an oil rig and a soccer ball. This showed their connection to the oil industry.
When the club returned in 2004, they had a new badge. But it still kept the oil rig and the soccer ball. It also used the club's colors.
