Petroleros de Salamanca C.F.C. is a Mexican football club. It is based in Salamanca, Guanajuato, México. The team currently plays in the Liga Premier de México.

Club History

The club started in the 1950s. In 1958, it joined the Segunda División de México. Back then, the team was known as Mapaches. They played in the second division until 1961. The club had to stop playing because of money problems.

Returning to the Field

In 1964, the club came back to the second division. A local oil company owned the team this time. They brought in famous players. However, the team never made it to the first division. From 1964 to 1986, the club had mixed results. It stopped playing again in 1986. During these years, the team was always called Petroleros de Salamanca.

In 2001, the same oil company started new professional sports clubs. First, they launched a basketball team. In 2004, the football club finally returned. It quickly joined the Primera A. In 2006, the club reached its first final in the Primera A. They lost to Puebla FC in a penalty shootout. The club played six more tournaments. Then, it was sold and moved to La Piedad, Michoacán. It became C.F. La Piedad.

Attempts to Return to Liga Premier

In 2013, the team came back as Salamanca F.C.. It spent several years in the Third Division of Mexico. The team tried to join the Liga Premier de México (Second Division) – Serie B on July 3, 2019. This was after an agreement with Real Potosino. Real Potosino was supposed to move to Salamanca and change its name. But on July 18, 2019, the Mexican Football Federation did not approve the change. So, Salamanca stayed in Liga TDP. Real Potosino stopped playing football.

In 2020, the club faced money problems. Its owners rented the team to Promotora Barajas Soccer. This was a soccer development center. In 2021, the rental agreement ended. The team officially stopped playing.

In 2022, the team returned to professional leagues. It was renamed C.F. Salamanca. This team was based on the Jaral del Progreso F.C. franchise. It was dissolved at the end of the 2022–23 season. This happened because a new team arrived in the city.

Official Return to Liga Premier

On January 27, 2023, Catedráticos Elite F.C. moved from Ameca, Jalisco to Salamanca, Guanajuato. This move happened after a merger with Petroleros de Salamanca. The local oil industry wanted a professional team in the city. So, the team was unofficially called Catedráticos Petroleros. Finally, on June 30, 2023, the team officially got its old name back. It was renamed Petroleros de Salamanca Catedráticos F.C.

Team Badge

In the early 1950s, clubs often used their city's symbol. So, Salamanca used the city crest from 1958 to 1961. In the early 1970s, the club used a new crest. It showed an oil rig and a soccer ball. When the club returned in 2004, it had a new badge. But it still kept the oil rig, the soccer ball, and the club's colors.
