Phillip Jerome Hellmuth Jr. (born July 16, 1964) is a famous American professional poker player. He is best known for holding the world record for the most World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets, with seventeen wins. Most of his bracelets were won playing a popular version of poker called no-limit hold'em.

Hellmuth won the main championship event at the 1989 World Series of Poker. He also won the main event at the 2012 World Series of Poker Europe. In 2007, he was added to the Poker Hall of Fame. Many people consider him one of the best poker tournament players of all time.

Personal Life

Phil Hellmuth was born in Madison, Wisconsin. When he was in school, he sometimes struggled with his grades and making friends. He once said he felt like the "ugly duckling" of his family. After high school, he went to the University of Wisconsin–Madison for three years. He then decided to leave college to play poker full-time.

Since 1992, he has lived in Palo Alto, California, with his wife, Katherine, and their two sons. He is also a big fan of the Golden State Warriors basketball team and often goes to their games.

Poker Career

Hellmuth is known for his unique personality at the poker table. He is sometimes called "The Poker Brat" because he can get frustrated when he loses a hand. He is also known for arriving late to tournaments. As of December 2024, he has won over $30,000,000 in live poker tournaments.

The World Series of Poker is the biggest poker tournament series in the world. Winning an event at the WSOP earns a player a special award called a bracelet.

In 1989, Hellmuth made history when he was only 24 years old. He won the WSOP Main Event, which is the most important tournament of the series. To win, he had to beat Johnny Chan, who had won the event the two previous years. At the time, Hellmuth was the youngest player ever to win the Main Event.

Over his career, Hellmuth has won 17 bracelets, more than any other player. Fourteen of his bracelets are from Texas hold'em games, but he has also won in other poker variations like Razz and 2-7 Lowball.
