He moved up to the senior team for the 2009–10 Premier League season. Jones signed a two-year contract with the team. A contract is an agreement to play for a certain time. He wore the number 28 uniform for Blackburn. His first game for Blackburn was on September 22, 2009. It was a League Cup game against Nottingham Forest. Blackburn won the game 1–0.

In February 2010, he signed a new five-year contract. This new contract meant he would stay with the team longer. Jones played his first Premier League game for Blackburn against Chelsea. This game was on March 21. The game ended in a 1–1 draw at Ewood Park, which is Blackburn's home stadium.

Phil Jones started the 2010–11 season playing in midfield. He became one of the main players for the team. In December 2010, Jones hurt his knee during a game. It was against West Ham United. Because of this injury, he could not play for three months.

Joining Manchester United

On June 13, 2011, Manchester United announced exciting news. They said they had agreed to sign Phil Jones. The deal was for a transfer fee, which is money paid to a club for a player. The deal would be final after he returned from playing international games.

He played his first game for Manchester United during a pre-season tour in the USA. This was in 2011. United won that game 3–1 against Chicago Fire. Jones came into the game as a substitute in the second half. He replaced Rio Ferdinand. This was in a 3–2 win against their rivals Manchester City. This big game was the 2011 Community Shield.

Jones played in his first Premier League game for United a week later. He came in as a substitute for Ferdinand again. United beat West Bromwich Albion 2–1 on the first weekend of the season.
