Life of Philip Marheineke

Philip was born in Hildesheim. He went to the University of Göttingen to study. In 1805, he became a philosophy professor at Erlangen University. Two years later, in 1807, he moved to Heidelberg.

By 1811, he was a full professor at Frederick William University in Berlin. From 1820, he also preached at Trinity Church. He worked with another famous thinker, Friedrich Schleiermacher. When he died, he was a high-ranking member of the church's main council.

Marheineke's Important Works

At first, Philip Marheineke was influenced by Schelling. Later, he became a follower of G. W. F. Hegel. He was seen as a leader of the "Hegelian Right." This group tried to explain church beliefs using Hegel's ideas.

Marheineke's main ideas about Christian beliefs are in his book Die Grundlehren der christlichen Dogmatik als Wissenschaft. The third edition of this book came out in 1847. The first edition, from 1819, still showed Schelling's influence. The second edition, from 1827, showed his shift to Hegel's ideas.

His books about church symbols were very well-researched. They showed his sharp thinking and fairness. His book Christliche Symbolik (1810-1814) is considered his best work.

Other books he wrote include:

  • Institutiones symbolicae (1812)
  • Geschichte der deutschen Reformation (1816)
  • Die Reformation, ihre Entstehung und Verbreitung in Deutschland (1846)
  • Theol. Vorlesungen (published after his death, 1847-1849)

He also helped edit Hegel's books that were published after Hegel's death. He worked on the Werke series (1832-1845). He also helped with an 1840 edition of Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion.
