Philipp is a small place in southern Tallahatchie County, Mississippi, United States. It is called an unincorporated community. This means it's a settled area that doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Philipp is located along Mississippi Highway 8. Even though it's unincorporated, Philipp has its own post office with a ZIP code of 38950. It is about 6 miles (10 km) east of Minter City. It is also about 14 miles (23 km) west of Holcomb.
History of Philipp
The community of Philipp was started by a man named Emanuel L. Philipp. He later became the Governor of Wisconsin. He founded the community between 1894 and 1902. At that time, he was managing a lumber company in Mississippi.
Getting Around: Transportation
The City of New Orleans is an Amtrak passenger train. It travels between New Orleans and Chicago. This train passes right through Philipp on CN tracks. However, the train does not stop in Philipp. The closest train station is in Greenwood. Greenwood is about 21 miles (34 km) south of Philipp.
Schools in Philipp
Students in Philipp attend schools that are part of the West Tallahatchie School District. The main schools for students in this area are R. H. Bearden Elementary School and West Tallahatchie High School.
In the past, there was a school called Philipp Consolidated School in the community. Over time, schools in the area changed. For example, Black Bayou Elementary School in Glendora used to serve parts of the district. It closed in 1998. West District Middle School, which is now R. H. Bearden Elementary, also served as a middle school for the area.
For higher education, Coahoma Community College is the designated community college for all of Tallahatchie County.
