Becoming an Artist
Philipp Grot Johann first studied to become an engineer. He learned his skills at a company called AG Vulcan Stettin. He even worked there for a while.
In 1861, he went to study engineering at a school in Hannover. It was there that he discovered his true passion: art! One of his first art projects was drawing pictures for old German writings at Wartburg castle.
Moving to Düsseldorf
In 1862, Philipp Grot Johann moved to Düsseldorf. He received help from a famous artist named Peter von Cornelius. In Düsseldorf, he studied art with two teachers: first Karl Ferdinand Sohn, and then Karl Lasch.
Except for one year in 1867 when he visited Antwerp, Grot Johann lived in Düsseldorf for the rest of his life.
Famous Works and Illustrations
Philipp Grot Johann created many illustrations for important books. He drew pictures for the works of famous writers like Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller. These books were published in Berlin. He also illustrated books by William Shakespeare and Walter Scott.
Illustrating Grimm's Fairy Tales
Even though he worked on many big projects, Grot Johann felt that his pictures for Grimm's Fairy Tales were very important. He put a lot of effort into them. Some of his illustrations for these fairy tales are quite funny. For example, in the story of The Devil with the Three Golden Hairs, he drew the devil reading a newspaper. If you look closely, you can see it's actually a stock market letter!
Philipp Grot Johann passed away when he was only 51 years old. After his death, another artist named Robert Leinweber took over illustrating later editions of Grimm's Fairy Tales.
Other Art Projects
Besides book illustrations, Grot Johann also created other types of art. He helped make the beautiful stained glass windows for St. Peter's church in Leipzig. These windows showed scenes from the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. He worked on this project from 1884 to 1886 with other artists, Eduard von Gebhardt and Carl Hertel.
