Philippe Bozon was born on November 30, 1966. He is a former French professional ice hockey player. He played for the St. Louis Blues in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1991 to 1995.
Philippe was the first of only seven players born and trained in France to ever play in the NHL. The other six French NHL players are Cristobal Huet, Stéphane Da Costa, Antoine Roussel, Pierre-Édouard Bellemare, Yohann Auvitu, and Alexandre Texier. Today, Philippe Bozon is the head coach for the Boxers de Bordeaux team in the Ligue Magnus. His amazing international playing career led to him being added to the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2008.
Playing Career Highlights
Philippe Bozon started his hockey journey playing for the St. Jean Beavers in Canada. This was part of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. After that, he played for four years in his home country, France.
While playing for the Grenoble Brûleurs de Loups, he helped his team win the French championship in 1991. Soon after, the St. Louis Blues from the NHL noticed his talent. He joined them as a forward who was good at defense. Sometimes, he even played on the scoring line with famous player Brett Hull.
After his time with the Blues, Bozon played professionally in Germany and Switzerland. In Germany, his team, Adler Mannheim, won the league championship three times! They won in 1997, 1998, and 1999.
International Hockey Career
Besides his club teams, Philippe Bozon also played for the French national team. He represented France in four different Olympic Games. This shows how important he was to French hockey.
Because of his great international career, he was honored by being inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2008. Later, on July 14, 2009, Philippe Bozon became the head coach of the French national junior ice hockey team.
Bozon's Family in Hockey
Philippe Bozon is married to Hélène Barbier, who was a professional alpine skier. They have three children: two sons, Tim and Kevin, and a daughter named Allison.
Both Tim and Kevin followed in their father's footsteps and play professional hockey. Tim plays for Genève-Servette HC in the National League and was even chosen by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Kevin currently plays for EHC Winterthur in the Swiss League.
Philippe's father, Alain Bozon, was also a hockey player. He was elected into the French Ice Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012. It's clear that hockey runs in the Bozon family!
