Philippe Leroy-Beaulieu (born 15 October 1930 – died 1 June 2024) was a famous French actor. He appeared in more than 150 films and many TV shows starting in 1960. He worked a lot in Italian movies, but also in his home country, France.
Philippe Leroy was nominated for a special award called the BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Actor for his very first movie, The Hole (1960). He was also nominated for an Emmy Award for playing Leonardo da Vinci in a TV mini-series about the famous artist's life. Before becoming an actor, he was a brave paratrooper in the French Foreign Legion. He served in two wars: the First Indochina War and the Algerian War.

Early Life and Adventures
Philippe Leroy-Beaulieu was born in Paris, France, on 15 October 1930. He came from a very old and important family. Some of his family members were famous thinkers, historians, and architects.
When he was 17, Philippe started working on a big ocean liner (a large passenger ship). He spent a whole year living and working in New York City, which must have been a big adventure!
Military Service
In 1953, Leroy joined the French Foreign Legion. This is a special part of the French army made up of soldiers from many different countries. He became a paratrooper, which means he was trained to jump out of planes.
He fought in the French Indochina War. Later, he also served as a second lieutenant in the Algerian War. For his bravery and service, he received several important awards. These included two Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur medals, which are very high honors in France. He retired from the military as a captain.
Becoming an Actor
Philippe Leroy started his acting career in 1960. His first movie was a crime film called The Hole. He played a character named Manu Borelli. This movie was very popular and helped him become known around the world. He was even nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Actor for his role.
In 1961, Leroy moved to Italy. He quickly made friends with important people in the film industry there. He starred in many Italian movies, like Seven Golden Men (1965) and The Night Porter (1974). But he also continued to act in French films, such as A Married Woman (1964) and La Femme Nikita (1990).
He also became very famous for his roles in TV shows. He played the brilliant artist Leonardo da Vinci in the TV series The Life of Leonardo da Vinci (1971). He also played Yanez de Gomera in the popular adventure series Sandokan (1976).
His last movie role was in 2019, in a film called La notte è piccola per noi.
Personal Life and Hobbies
Philippe Leroy married an Italian journalist named Silvia Tortora in 1990. They were together until she passed away in 2022. They had two children, Philippe and Michelle. He also had another daughter, actress Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, from an earlier marriage.
In his later years, Philippe Leroy loved parachuting as a hobby. He was part of the parachuting team for the SS Lazio sports club in Italy. He also supported their football (soccer) team. When he turned 80 in 2010, he celebrated by jumping out of a plane at a big airshow!
In 2011, when he was 81 years old, he even spent 12 days in Afghanistan. He went there as a special reporter with Italian paratroopers.
Philippe Leroy passed away in Rome, Italy, on 1 June 2024, at the age of 93.
