You can find the black-necked red cotinga in the western part of the Amazon Basin. This huge area covers parts of Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. You might also see it in a small area along the southern border of Venezuela.
These birds love to live in warm, wet forests. They prefer lowland forests in tropical and subtropical areas.
Where Does It Live?
The black-necked red cotinga lives in the western Amazon Basin. It has two main areas where it can be found.
Northwestern Amazon
One area is in the northwest of the Amazon Basin. This region stretches north from the Amazon River. It goes west from the Rio Negro river, crossing into southern Venezuela. It also covers all of the Amazon parts of southern Colombia and eastern Ecuador. From there, it extends south into northern Peru. In Peru, it stays north of the lower parts of the Ucayali River and the Marañón River.
Central-Southwestern Amazon
The second main area is in the central-southwest of the Amazon Basin. This area is similar in size to the first. It is bordered on the west by the Madeira River and on the north by the Amazon River. This range extends east beyond the Tapajós River.
There's another cotinga bird, the Guianan red cotinga, which lives in the Guianas and the eastern Amazon. The black-necked red cotinga's range only meets the Guianan red cotinga's range near the lower part of the Tapajós River.
