Phoenix is a small village located in Oswego County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 2,226 people lived here. The village got its name from Alexander Phoenix.
Phoenix is known for its heavy snowfall. It is in the "lake-effect snow belt" near Lake Ontario. This means it often gets over 200 inches (508 cm) of snow each winter! Phoenix is in the southwest part of the town of Schroeppel.

Discovering Phoenix's Past
Early Days and Village Incorporation
The village of Phoenix was officially formed in 1848. This was an important step in its growth and development.
The Great Fire of 1916
On September 23, 1916, a big fire almost destroyed Phoenix. It started around 11:00 pm and burned through most of the business area. The fire also stopped the village's water pumps, making it hard to fight the flames. The fire lasted until the next morning.
The Oswego Canal and Its Bridges
The Oswego Canal is a very important part of Phoenix. Lock 1 of the canal is located near Culvert Street. It was built around 1911 and helps boats travel up or down the river by changing the water level.
There are also special bridges over the canal:
- A bascule bridge on Culvert Street lifts up to let boats pass when the lock gates open. It was built in 1986.
- Another bascule bridge, built in 1912, used to connect to Mill Island (now called Lock Island). It is now kept in a raised position.
The 2002 Earthquake
On April 20, 2002, many people in Phoenix felt an earthquake. It happened around 6:50 am and had a strength of 5.2. The earthquake's center was near Plattsburgh, New York. Luckily, no damage or injuries were reported in Phoenix.
