Pichidegua (Spanish pronunciation: [pitʃiˈðeɣwa]) is a town and a commune in Chile. It is located in the O'Higgins Region, within the Cachapoal Province. A commune is like a local area or district that has its own government.
About Pichidegua's Population
Every few years, countries count their people in something called a census. This helps them understand how many people live in different areas.
In 2002, a census showed that Pichidegua had 17,756 people living there. Out of these, 9,208 were men and 8,548 were women.
Most of Pichidegua's population, about 12,791 people (72%), lived in rural areas. These are areas outside of towns, often with farms or open spaces. The remaining 4,965 people (28%) lived in urban areas, which are the more developed town parts. Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in Pichidegua grew by 7%.
How Pichidegua is Governed
Pichidegua is a commune, which means it has its own local government. This government is run by a municipal council. The head of the council is called an alcalde, which is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen directly by the people in an election every four years.
Pichidegua is also part of larger areas for national elections. For example, it is in an electoral district that sends people to the Chamber of Deputies. This is one part of Chile's national parliament, where laws are made. Currently, Alejandra Sepúlveda and Javier Macaya represent this district.
The commune is also part of a senatorial constituency that sends people to the Senate. The Senate is the other part of Chile's national parliament. Andrés Chadwick Piñera and Juan Pablo Letelier Morel represent the O'Higgins Region in the Senate.
