Pickett is a small community in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, in the United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or a village. Instead, it's part of a larger area called the town of Utica.
Pickett is located in the southwestern part of Winnebago County. You can find it along Wisconsin Highway 44, which connects the towns of Ripon and Oshkosh. The community also has its own post office with the ZIP code 54964.
History of Pickett
The community of Pickett has an interesting history with a few name changes over the years.
Early Names
When the community first started, it was known by a different name. In May 1850, it was called Welaunee or Weelaunee. This was also the name of its first post office.
How Pickett Got Its Name
Later, the community's name changed to Pickett's Station. This new name honored Armine Pickett, who was an important early settler and land owner in the area. He also served in the Wisconsin State Assembly during the early 1860s. The State Assembly is a group of elected officials who make laws for the state.
The name changed to Pickett's Station in the 1870s. This happened when a railroad was completed through the area. Finally, in 1883, the name was shortened to what it is today: Pickett.
