The Story of Piedmont
Piedmont gets its name from a French word that means "the foot of the mountain." This is because the city sits on the eastern side of the Black Hills. People first settled in this area in the mid-1870s.
Piedmont was officially founded in 1890. For almost 117 years, it was not an official city. It finally became a city on August 16, 2007. The people of Piedmont then elected their first town board in November 2007.
Where is Piedmont?
Piedmont is located in a special area called the Red Valley. This valley is part of a rock layer known as the Spearfish Formation. It forms a circle around the Black Hills. The ground here is mostly red shale with layers of gypsum.
The city is west of Interstate 90. It is north of Summerset and south of Elk Creek. To the east, you'll find the Black Hills National Forest. The city covers about 4.05 square kilometers (1.56 square miles) of land.

In 2010, there were 222 people living in Piedmont. By 2020, the population had grown to 971 people. Most of the people living in Piedmont are White, with some Native American and other racial backgrounds.

Natural Events
Piedmont has faced some natural challenges. There have been several large forest fires nearby. These include the Little Elk fire in 2002, the Ricco Fire in 2005, and the Eastridge Fire in 2006.
In August 2007, a big storm hit Piedmont. It brought very large hail, some as big as softballs. Heavy rain also caused significant flooding and damage throughout the city.
Local Economy
Many people who live in Piedmont work in the nearby city of Rapid City. Piedmont also has some important local businesses. Mountain West Products takes bark from sawmills and turns it into products for landscaping.
High Plains Genetics helps livestock farmers by providing special genetic materials. Jack's Campers is another large employer. Piedmont also has many smaller businesses that focus on tourism, transportation, and construction.
