Summerset is a city located in Meade County, South Dakota, in the United States. In 2020, about 2,972 people lived there. It is special because it was the first new city to be officially formed in South Dakota since 1985.
Summerset became an official city after a special vote on June 7, 2005. Even though an early count showed 597 residents, many people believed there were more than a thousand. The city is found west of Interstate 90, between the towns of Blackhawk and Piedmont. Summerset shares its postal codes, 57718 and 57769, with these nearby towns.
When Summerset was first formed, it faced some challenges. People were unsure about the exact city borders. There was also a legal case to try and stop the city from being official. Some citizens even asked for the city to be un-formed, partly because of concerns about taxes. However, these efforts did not succeed.
A court case about the city's formation happened on September 14, 2006. The next day, the jury decided that Summerset did indeed have more than 1,000 residents when the vote took place. This decision supported Summerset's status as a city.
