Pierre-Hector Coullié was an important leader in the Roman Catholic Church. He was born in 1829 and passed away in 1912. He became a Cardinal and served as the Archbishop of Lyon in France.

Early Life and Becoming a Priest

Pierre-Hector Coullié was born in Paris, France, on March 14, 1829. He went to school at Saint-Nicolas-des-Champs. Later, he studied at the Saint-Sulpice Seminary in Paris to become a priest.

He became a priest on December 23, 1854. After this, he worked in the Archdiocese of Paris. He was a professor at a smaller seminary. He also served as a vicar in several churches, including Ste-Marguerite, St-Eustache, and Notre Dame des Victoires, from 1854 to 1876.

Becoming a Bishop

On September 29, 1876, Pierre-Hector Coullié was named a titular bishop of Sidonia. This meant he had the title of bishop but did not oversee a specific area. At the same time, he was appointed as a coadjutor bishop for Orléans. A coadjutor bishop helps the main bishop and is expected to take over when the main bishop leaves.

He became the main Bishop of Orléans on October 11, 1878. Later, on June 15, 1893, he was promoted to lead the important metropolitan see of Lyon. This made him the Archbishop of Lyon.

In 1896, there was a big meeting in Lyon called the Congress of the Christian Democrats. Archbishop Coullié spoke out against some of the ideas being discussed at this meeting. Because of his strong objections, those specific ideas were not included in the Congress the following year.

Becoming a Cardinal

Pierre-Hector Coullié was made a Cardinal-Priest on April 19, 1897. This is a very high rank in the Catholic Church. He received his red hat and the title of SS. Trinità al Monte Pincio on March 24, 1898.

As a Cardinal, he took part in the important meeting called the conclave in 1903. This is where cardinals gather to elect a new Pope.

Cardinal Coullié passed away on September 12, 1912, in Lyon. He was laid to rest in the main cathedral of Lyon, known as Lyon Cathedral.
