Pietro Novelli (born March 2, 1603 – died August 27, 1647) was an Italian painter. He lived during the Baroque period. He worked mostly in Palermo, a city in Sicily. People knew him as il Monrealese or Pietro "Malta" Novelli. This helped tell him apart from his father, Pietro Antonio Novelli I. Some people even called him the Raphael of Sicily because he was such a talented artist.

About Pietro Novelli

Pietro Novelli was born in Monreale, Sicily. He later died in Palermo. He first learned to paint from his father. His father was also a painter and made mosaics. Sadly, his father passed away in 1625.

When he was young, Pietro trained with other artists. These included Gerardo Asturino. In 1618, he moved to Palermo. There, he became an apprentice to Vito Carrera (1555–1623).

His first painting with a date on it was from 1626. It was called St. Anthony Abbot. He painted it for a church in Palermo.

His Artistic Style

Novelli's painting style was greatly influenced by Anthony van Dyck. Van Dyck was a famous painter who visited Sicily in 1624. Van Dyck's painting, the Madonna of the Rosary, was very important. It inspired many local artists in Palermo.

Novelli also got ideas from artists called Caravaggisti. These painters used strong contrasts of light and shadow. This style is sometimes called tenebrism. Many of these artists worked in Naples. One example is Jusepe de Ribera.

Pietro Novelli painted for many churches. He created works for churches in Piana degli Albanesi. He also painted for rich families in Sicily. He made paintings to decorate their large homes.

He painted for the church of Santa Zita in Monreale. He also painted a Marriage of Cana for a monastery's dining hall in Monreale.

Later Life and Legacy

In 1647, there was a revolution in Palermo. Pietro Novelli was hurt during this event. He later died from his injuries.

He taught many students who became painters themselves. Some of his pupils were Andrea Carreca and Michele Blasco. Besides painting, Novelli was also an architect. He designed buildings and created stage sets for plays.
