Exploring Pine Creek

Pine Creek is a quiet rural locality. It's a great example of the vast, open spaces you can find in South Australia. The area is known for its natural beauty and historical connections.

What is a Hundred?

The area of Pine Creek is exactly the same as a special land division called the Hundred of Ketchowla. A "hundred" is an old way of dividing land in Australia. It was used for mapping and managing land.

The Hundred of Ketchowla was created on August 5, 1880. It was named by Governor William Jervois. The name "Ketchowla" comes from an Aboriginal word. Its exact meaning is not known today.

Ketchowla Station: A Historic Place

A large property called Ketchowla Station is located within Pine Creek. Its main house, called a homestead, is also here. The station was named after the Hundred of Ketchowla.

A post office used to operate at Ketchowla. It opened around 1872 and closed on November 30, 1917. Some of the old buildings from Ketchowla Station are very important. The Ketchowla Woolshed, Old Homestead and Outbuildings are listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. This means they are protected because of their historical value.

Other Pine Creeks

It's interesting to know that there are other places in South Australia also called Pine Creek. For example, one Pine Creek is a small river that flows into the River Wakefield. It helps form the border between two other land divisions. These are the Hundred of Upper Wakefield and the Hundred of Saddleworth.
