A Look Back at Pine Level's History
In 1963, Floyd G. Hinnant, who was the Postmaster of Pine Level, wrote down some of the town's history.
Early Days and Naming
Long ago, when travel was slow, Pine Level was a busy trading spot. It was important for people who worked with turpentine. Turpentine was made from pine trees. In 1868, two brothers, Daniel Thomas Oliver and William Berry Oliver, came to the area. They set up a turpentine factory. They found many pine trees and the land was quite flat. This is how the town got its name: Pine Level.
Some records say that Gaston Britt and Bryant Hinnant were merchants there at that time. They built stores to provide supplies for the workers. One of the original stores, the D. T. Oliver Store, is still standing today. It is now used as a workshop.
Growth and Services
The Southern Railroad built tracks through the area. This helped turpentine dealers send their products away by train. A train stop was added in town. Then, a post office was set up. Mr. Thomas Hinnant became the first postmaster in 1886. People were very happy when free mail delivery started in the South.
By the early 1900s, more people moved to Pine Level. The town grew and became a progressive rural area. At that time, Pine Level had a population of almost 1,000 people. It had a bank, an oil mill, and a modern cotton gin. There were also many businesses that served local farmers. The town had five churches, two civic clubs, and a volunteer fire department. Work was also being done to build a modern water system. This helped the fast-growing town keep up with its needs.
