Pine Level, also known as Pine Tucky, is a small community in Montgomery County, Alabama, United States. It is an unincorporated community, which means it does not have its own local government like a city or town. Pine Level is located about 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Montgomery. You can find it along U.S. Route 231.

History of Pine Level

Pine Level was first called Pine Tucky. This name probably came from the many pine trees in the area. The soil there was also quite sandy. Over time, the community's name changed to Pine Level. A post office opened in Pine Level in 1839, which helped the community grow.

Pine Level is known for being the childhood home of two very important women in American history. They both played a big part in the Civil Rights Movement.

Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott

  • Rosa Parks lived in Pine Level when she was a child. She became famous for her brave actions in 1955. At that time, buses in Montgomery, Alabama, were segregated. This meant Black people had to sit in the back and give up their seats to white people. Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger. Her refusal helped start the Montgomery bus boycott. This boycott was a major event in the Civil Rights Movement. It lasted for over a year and helped end segregation on public buses.

Claudette Colvin's Courageous Act

  • Claudette Colvin also lived in Pine Level until she was 8 years old. Nine months before Rosa Parks, Claudette Colvin did something very similar. At just 15 years old, she also refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus in Montgomery. Her brave act was an important step in the fight for equal rights.
