The Pine River is a cool river in eastern New Hampshire, a state in the United States. It's about 19.2 miles (30.9 km) long. This river flows into Ossipee Lake. The water from Ossipee Lake eventually joins the Saco River. All this water then travels to the big Atlantic Ocean.
The River's Journey
Starting Point and Path
The Pine River starts its journey at Pine River Pond in Wakefield, New Hampshire. Almost immediately, it flows into the town of Ossipee. The river then heads northwest through a valley. This valley is sandy and filled with pine trees.
A long, sandy ridge called the Pine River Esker follows the river. This esker is over 6 miles (10 km) long. However, much of it has been dug up for sand and gravel.
The river briefly enters the western part of Effingham. Here, it passes through a special natural area called the Heath Pond Bog. After about 2 miles (3 km), the river flows back into Ossipee. Soon after, it reaches its end at Ossipee Lake.
Other Waterways Nearby
The Beech River is an important stream that joins the Pine River. It enters just east of the village of Center Ossipee. This meeting point is about one mile upstream from Ossipee Lake.
New Hampshire Route 16 is a road that runs through the same wide, sandy valley. While the road doesn't follow the river very closely, they share the same general area.
