Pinnacle is a small community in southwestern Stokes County, North Carolina, United States. It is known as an unincorporated community and a census-designated place. This means it is a recognized area with a population, but it does not have its own local government like a city or town. Pinnacle is located about 5 miles (8 km) southeast of Pilot Mountain, nestled between Pilot Mountain State Park and Hanging Rock State Park.
History
Pinnacle was first called Culler. It was named after Emanuel W. Culler, who owned the land where a railroad station was built. He also became the community's first mayor. The name was changed to Pinnacle in 1894. The community officially became a town in 1901, but this decision was canceled in 1903.
About 20 miles (32 km) east of Pinnacle, you can find the remains of the Rock House. This was once a huge four-story stone building with very thick walls, about three feet (0.9 meters) thick! It was built in 1770 by Captain John 'Jack' Martin. He was one of the first two settlers in Stokes County. He received a large piece of land, about 8,000 acres (32 km²), from the King.
Captain Martin was an important person. He served in the North Carolina government and was a judge for over 30 years. The Rock House was built by enslaved people using local flint stones. It had a fireplace so big you could roast an ox in it! The outside was covered in white plaster. Early settlers used it as a strong fort, called a blockhouse, for protection.
Colonel Martin was a brave fighter for the American side during the Revolutionary War. He was even badly hurt while spying for American forces before the Battle of Kings Mountain. His brother was General Joseph Martin, who the town of Martinsville, Virginia, is named after. Colonel Jack Martin fought in many battles.
The Rock House was a gathering place for soldiers during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. It is one of the oldest buildings in Stokes County. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Sadly, the house burned down in 1890, and only its strong stone walls remain today. The Stokes County Historical Society now works to protect these historic ruins.
Besides the Rock House, another important historical site, the Hauser Farm, was also added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
