Pino Daniele (born Giuseppe Daniele on March 19, 1955 – died January 4, 2015) was a famous Italian singer, songwriter, and musician. He was known for mixing many different music styles, like pop, blues, jazz, and music from Italy and the Middle East.

Life and Music

Pino Daniele was born in Naples, Italy, into a working-class family. His father worked at the harbor. Pino taught himself how to play the guitar. He started his music career in the 1970s, playing for other popular singers.

Early Career and Unique Style

In 1977, Pino released his first album, Terra mia. This album was a great mix of traditional Neapolitan music and blues sounds. Pino called his music "tarumbò." This word described his unique blend of tarantella (a fast Italian folk dance), blues, and rumba (a type of Latin music).

His songs were special because they were sung in a strong Neapolitan dialect. They often talked about social problems in Naples and Italy. Some songs also shared his personal feelings. Later, he started mixing English, Italian, and Neapolitan words in his songs.

Rising to Fame

Pino's talent became even clearer with his next album, Pino Daniele, released in 1979. His biggest hit came in 1980 with the album Nero a metà (meaning "Half-Black Skinned"). Many people said this album helped bring back the spirit of Neapolitan song. In the same year, Pino Daniele opened for Bob Marley at a big concert in Milan.

In 1981, he released Vai Mo. Many famous Neapolitan musicians, like James Senese, Enzo Avitabile, Tullio De Piscopo, and Tony Esposito, played on his albums. Their contributions were highly praised.

Exploring World Music

In 1982, Pino Daniele started exploring world music. On his album Bella 'mbriana, he featured guest musicians like Alphonso Johnson and Wayne Shorter. The next year, he performed a concert in Havana, Cuba, and later formed a Latin-American band.

In 1983, Pino worked with American singer Richie Havens on the album Common Ground. His interest in Arabic music was clear in his 1987 album Bonne Soirée. His 1988 album, Schizzechea With Love, had more of a Mediterranean feel.

Pino also worked with Italian actor and director Massimo Troisi. He created the music for Troisi's films Le vie del Signore sono finite and Pensavo fosse amore invece era un calesse.

Later Years and Collaborations

In 1995, Pino released Non calpestare i fiori nel deserto (meaning "Don't step on the flowers in the desert"). This album tried to bring back his African and ethnic music influences. It sold over 800,000 copies! His tour for this album included two shows with jazz guitarist Pat Metheny.

In 2010, Pino Daniele was invited by his friend Eric Clapton to play at the Crossroads Guitar Festival in Chicago. He performed with other great guitarists like Joe Bonamassa and Robert Randolph. In 2011, he played another concert with Eric Clapton in Italy.

Pino Daniele passed away from a heart attack on January 4, 2015, in Rome.
